This piece appeared in April 2010 in downtown Los Angeles, on the building at 908-910 South Broadway, shortly before the premiere of the film “Exit Through the Gift Shop”. It translates an existing “PARKING” sign into its own language.

Banksy painted out the last letters of the sign, “ING”, in white, leaving only the word “PARK”. A small, single-colour figure of a girl swings from the letter “A”, as if it had become a real swing.

This simple but clever intervention reverses the meaning of a commercial sign. An instruction to park cars suddenly becomes a children’s playground, a “park”. The piece also carries an indirect critique of how much urban space is set aside for cars, and how little for children’s play.

The mural has remained in place to this day, though construction work around it has reduced its visibility over time, and it can now only be seen through a narrower gap between buildings. When the building itself was put up for sale in 2022, this permanent Banksy piece on its wall became one of the most talked about features of the sale.
