Finsbury Park, London, England, 2023
Created in 2023 on the wall of an apartment building on Hornsey Road in London’s Finsbury Park, Green Washing is a striking critique of environmental issues and the concept of ‘green washing.’
The artwork utilizes the pruned branches of a real tree; on the wall behind the tree, green paint mimics the appearance of leaves, making the tree appear leafy. A stencil figure of a child is depicted on the wall, holding a paint sprayer and applying green paint toward the tree.
Banksy uses this piece to address the destruction of nature and the superficiality of eco-friendly appearances, inviting viewers to reflect on environmental negligence and hypocrisy.
The pruned tree symbolizes nature’s destruction and exposure at the hands of humanity, while the green-painted leaves allude to ‘green washing’ policies that falsely compensate for nature’s loss.
Banksy questions the insincerity of companies and authorities despite growing environmental awareness. The child’s innocent act reflects a naive attempt to save nature, yet the mural as a whole critiques the inadequacy of such efforts and the ongoing harm caused by false environmentalism. The dripping effect of the green paint symbolizes the temporary and superficial nature of these solutions, urging viewers to consider the depth of environmental issues and the need for genuine solutions.
Green Washing emerged in 2023, a time when global discussions on environmental crises and climate change were intensifying. In the 2020s, as environmental awareness grew, the concept of ‘green washing’ faced increasing criticism, with companies misleading the public through false eco-friendly policies.
The mural garnered significant attention upon its appearance, and Finsbury Park residents embraced it as a symbol of environmental awareness. However, it was damaged shortly afterward.
