The World of Banksy

Who is Banksy

Nobody knows who Banksy is, yet everybody knows his name. He is probably the most famous yet mysterious graffiti artist this world has ever seen. Some regard him as a prankster, while others view him as an artistic genius. From Bristol to Barcelona, Sydney to San Francisco, one thing that everyone agrees on is that his popularity cannot be denied. In 2010, Time magazine selected the British artist for its list of the world’s 100 most influential people, alongside Barack Obama, Steve Jobs, and Lady Gaga. Millions know him, and his works are sold for millions.

In the 1980s in Bristol, graffiti began to emerge as a form of expression primarily practiced by young, lower-to-middle-class urbanites. During this time, John Nation from Barton Hill visited Amsterdam. Captivated by the vibrant graffiti adorning the city streets, he meticulously documented everything he could. Later, he provided this material as a model to the newly emerging street art group of the Barton Hill Youth. “Tagging” was the prevalent activity at the time, involving the use of aerosol spray paint to create signatures. Local law enforcement began to crack down on these delinquents who shamelessly defaced public property. The Barton Youth Club became a haven for those “delinquents.” It was from here that the first roster of Bristolian graffiti artists emerged, including Banksy among others. This new art form was predominantly associated with males and typically occurred at night, often involving physical and legal risks.

Banksy’s Artistic Approach and Social Criticism

Banksy is not just a graffiti artist but also a sharp social critic. His works often address themes such as war, capitalism, consumerism, migration, authority, and individual freedom. For example, in 2003, he painted Flower Thrower (Man Throwing Flowers) on the West Bank Wall in Jerusalem, depicting a rioter throwing flowers instead of a Molotov cocktail, becoming a powerful symbol of peace and resistance. Banksy’s stencil technique allows for both quick application and striking visuals, enabling him to work illicitly on the streets while minimizing the risk of getting caught, all while effectively conveying his message. His works, often ironic and provocative, unsettle viewers and compel them to think.

Milestones and Sensational Actions

One of the most striking moments in Banksy’s career occurred in 2018 at Sotheby’s auction in London. When his Girl with Balloon sold for 1.04 million pounds, a shredder mechanism hidden inside the frame activated, partially destroying the artwork. This act was interpreted as a critique of the commercial nature of the art market and the commodification of art. Renamed Love is in the Bin, the piece later sold for 18.6 million pounds in 2021, becoming one of Banksy’s most expensive works. Additionally, in 2015, he opened Dismaland, a “bemusement park” in Weston-super-Mare, England, offering a dark, humorous critique of consumer culture and the entertainment industry; it attracted 150,000 visitors in just 36 days.

Recent Activities and Global Impact

Banksy continues to create art actively today. In 2022, during the war in Ukraine, he painted murals in cities like Kyiv and Borodyanka, drawing attention to the destruction of the conflict and showing solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
